Privacy Policy
Unrecorded is a privacy awareness app created by Meldlife Ltd.
This Privacy Policy explains how Unrecorded handles information when you use the Unrecorded app or visit the Unrecorded website.
Unrecorded is designed to be local-first. The app scans nearby Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) signals for patterns that may indicate smart glasses or wearable recording devices. Detection and risk scoring run on your device. By default, nearby Bluetooth scan results are not uploaded to Meldlife Ltd or other servers we operate.
Unrecorded does not prove that anyone is recording. It shows possible privacy risk indicators (for example low, medium, or high risk) based on nearby signals visible to your device. Alerts and notifications describe possible risk — not confirmed recording.
At a glance (app):
- BLE scanning and risk scoring are processed on your device
- Nearby scan data is not uploaded to us by default
- No account required; no in-app analytics in the core scanning experience
- Official store builds may show Google AdMob banner ads; optional pay-what-you-want in-app purchase to remove ads
- Scan results and nearby device identifiers are not passed to ad networks
1. Who We Are
Unrecorded is operated by Meldlife Ltd (“MeldLife”, “we”, “us”, “our”).
For this policy: “Unrecorded”, “we”, “us”, and “our” refer to Meldlife Ltd and the Unrecorded app.
Privacy enquiries: privacy@unrecorded.app
2. Summary
Unrecorded is designed to minimise data collection.
The app:
- does not require an account
- processes Bluetooth Low Energy scanning and privacy risk scoring on your device (local-first)
- does not upload nearby Bluetooth scan results to our servers by default
- does not include third-party analytics or telemetry in the core scanning experience by default
- does not use scan data to identify you
- does not build a profile about you
- does not tell us who or what is near you
- shows possible privacy risk indicators — it does not prove whether anyone is recording
- may show small banner ads via Google AdMob in official app-store builds (see section 7)
- offers an optional in-app purchase to remove ads; core scanning stays free
The app processes nearby signal information on your device so it can show possible privacy risk indicators. Wording in the app is intentionally cautious: signals may match known patterns; that is not proof of recording.
3. Information Processed by the App (Bluetooth / BLE)
When you use Unrecorded, the app processes nearby Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) signal information made available by your device and operating system. This happens on your device to evaluate possible privacy risk — not to prove that recording is taking place.
This may include:
- visible Bluetooth device names
- Bluetooth identifiers made available by the operating system
- approximate signal strength
- whether a nearby device appears connectable
- signal patterns or indicators used by the app’s risk model
- risk level and explanation shown in the app
This information is used to help the app identify signals that may match smart glasses or wearable recording devices.
Bluetooth identifiers and visible names can be hidden, randomised, spoofed, or inaccurate. Signal strength is noisy and should not be treated as a precise distance measurement.
4. What Stays on Your Device
Unrecorded is designed so nearby BLE scan data stays on your device. All detection and scoring for privacy risk indicators is performed locally unless you explicitly choose a future optional export or sharing feature (none is required to use the app today).
By default, Meldlife Ltd does not collect, receive, or upload your nearby Bluetooth scan results, device names seen during scans, or risk scores derived from those scans.
We do not use nearby scan data to:
- identify you
- track your location
- track people around you
- build an advertising profile
- sell information about you
- monitor your behaviour
If future versions introduce optional export, diagnostics, backup, or support features, those features must be clearly explained before any related data is shared.
5. Accounts
Unrecorded does not require you to create an account.
If accounts are introduced in the future, this Privacy Policy must be updated before account features are released.
6. Analytics and Core App Tracking
The core Unrecorded experience — Bluetooth scanning, risk scoring, and privacy alerts — does not include third-party analytics or telemetry by default. We do not currently use separate in-app analytics SDKs to track how you use scanning features.
Ad serving in official store builds uses Google AdMob (see section 7). AdMob may collect or process data according to Google’s policies; that is separate from our BLE scan pipeline.
If privacy-respecting analytics are added to the app in the future, this policy must be updated before release to explain:
- what is collected
- why it is collected
- whether it is optional
- which provider is used
- how users can control it
7. Advertising (Google AdMob) and In-App Purchases
Advertising — Google AdMob
Official Google Play and other app-store builds of Unrecorded may display small bottom banner advertisements served by Google AdMob on some screens (for example when no active privacy alert is shown, and on help or settings screens). Ads are optional to remove via in-app purchase (below).
- Isolation from scanning: The detection engine and scan logic do not depend on advertising, analytics, or cloud tracking. Ad code is kept separate from Bluetooth scanning and risk scoring.
- No scan data to ads: Nearby Bluetooth scan results, visible device names, Bluetooth identifiers, and privacy risk outputs are not passed to AdMob or other ad networks.
- Non-personalised by default: Ad requests use non-personalised ads by default until you provide consent through Google’s User Messaging Platform (UMP) where required (for example UK / GDPR).
- Change your choices: In the app, open Settings & Privacy → Ad privacy choices to change or withdraw advertising consent where UMP applies.
- What AdMob may process: When an ad is shown, Google AdMob may process information such as advertising ID, IP address, device type, and interaction with ads, as described in Google’s Privacy Policy and Google’s information about how AdMob uses data. You can limit ad personalisation in your device settings where available.
Ads must not interfere with the core scanning experience.
In-app purchase — remove ads
Unrecorded offers an optional pay-what-you-want non-consumable in-app purchase to remove banner ads. Core Bluetooth scanning and privacy risk indicators remain free.
Purchases are processed by the app store you use (for example Google Play Billing on Android or Apple In-App Purchase on iOS). Meldlife Ltd does not receive your full payment card details. The store may process purchase history, account identifiers, and region according to its own privacy policy.
If advertising or payment providers change, this section will be updated and the effective date above revised.
Open-source builds of Unrecorded remain available to build from source under the project licence; those builds may omit store ads and billing unless you configure them yourself.
8. Permissions
Unrecorded may request Bluetooth, nearby device, notification, or location-related permissions depending on your device and operating system.
These permissions are used so the app can scan nearby Bluetooth signals and show relevant privacy risk indicators.
On some versions of Android or iOS, Bluetooth scanning may require permissions that sound broader than Unrecorded’s actual use. Unrecorded uses these permissions for nearby signal awareness, not to track your physical location.
Permission behaviour may differ between Android and iOS.
You can control app permissions through your device settings.
9. Notifications
If Unrecorded uses notifications, they are used to show app status or privacy risk alerts.
Notifications should not claim that recording has been detected.
You can disable notifications through your device settings.
10. Website Privacy
The Unrecorded website is intended to be a simple static website.
The website should not use:
- cookies
- analytics scripts
- tracking pixels
- behavioural advertising scripts
- browser fingerprinting
- unnecessary third-party embeds
If the hosting provider collects basic server logs for security, reliability, or abuse prevention, those logs are controlled by the hosting provider.
Do not add website analytics unless the privacy policy is updated first.
11. What Unrecorded Cannot Do
- Unrecorded cannot confirm that someone is recording.
- Unrecorded cannot detect every camera, microphone, phone, or recording device.
- Unrecorded cannot guarantee that a nearby signal belongs to smart glasses.
- Unrecorded cannot detect devices that do not expose useful Bluetooth signals.
- Unrecorded cannot prevent recording.
- Unrecorded should be treated as a privacy awareness tool, not a security guarantee.
12. Data Retention
Because Unrecorded is designed to process scan information locally on your device, we do not retain nearby Bluetooth scan results on our servers by default.
If the app stores recent scan history locally on your device, that information remains on your device unless you delete it, clear app data, or uninstall the app.
If future versions add optional cloud features, this policy must be updated before those features are released.
13. Sharing Information
We do not sell your Bluetooth scan data.
We do not share nearby Bluetooth scan results, device names from scans, or risk scores with advertisers, data brokers, or third-party analytics providers by default.
Information may be processed by third parties only where necessary for services such as:
- Google AdMob — banner advertising in official store builds (see section 7; scan data is not shared with AdMob)
- Google Play or Apple App Store — app distribution and in-app purchase processing
- website hosting for
unrecorded.app - security and abuse prevention by infrastructure providers
If we add optional analytics, cloud backup, or other data-sharing features, this policy will be updated before those features are released.
14. Children
Unrecorded is not designed specifically for children.
The app is intended as a general privacy awareness tool.
If app store requirements require a more specific children’s privacy statement, update this section before launch.
15. International Processing
If you visit the website or install the app through an app store, some information may be processed by infrastructure providers, app stores, payment providers, or hosting providers in other countries.
Where this applies, those providers are responsible for their own processing under their own privacy policies.
Unrecorded itself is designed to avoid uploading nearby scan results by default.
16. Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights over personal information, such as the right to ask for access, correction, deletion, or restriction of processing.
Because Unrecorded does not require an account and does not upload nearby scan results by default, we may not hold personal information that identifies you.
For privacy questions or requests, contact privacy@unrecorded.app.
17. Open-Source Project
Unrecorded is being developed as an open-source project.
This helps users and contributors inspect how the app works, understand its limitations, and suggest improvements.
Open-source transparency does not change the privacy commitments described in this policy.
18. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as Unrecorded develops.
When we make meaningful changes, we will update the effective date above.
If the app introduces accounts, analytics, cloud features, advertising providers, payment providers, or optional data-sharing features, this policy must be reviewed and updated before those features are released.
